5/13/2023 0 Comments The broken earth books![]() ![]() Jemisin, imagines, to much acclaim, the cataclysmic events that would befall our planet where something to happen to the Moon. ![]() The Broken Earth trilogy, written by N.K. But little is made of the effect of the Moon’s disappearance from Earth’s orbit, and the likely geological impact it would have had on our planet. The full pilot is available on YouTube and is definitely worth watching. Over the course of two seasons (the first being the most superior), the Moon encounters black holes and space warps (the science is cagey, but let’s run with it), and all manners of aliens and danger. This was devastating for the Commander Koenig and the crew of Moonbase Alpha. Space 1999, a great (and sometimes not-so-great) British TV show from the 1970’s, created an extraordinary concept in which, due to a nuclear explosion on the Moon’s surface, our lunar neighbour was wrenched out of orbit and flung into the outer regions of our solar system and beyond. ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments Ted chiang omphalos![]() These are stories with the nature of parables - and so slightly moralistic at times - but that, wherever they're set, have a science/speculative fiction slant. It's almost inevitable that a collection will miss a five star rating because some part of it doesn't appeal and that's the case here. And, each in its own way, the stories prove that complex and thoughtful science fiction can rise to new heights of beauty, meaning and compassion. ![]() ![]() In Exhalation, Ted Chiang wrestles with the oldest questions on earth - what is the nature of the universe? What does it mean to be human? - and ones that no one else has even imagined. Also included are two brand-new stories: ‘Omphalos’ and ‘Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom’. And in ‘The Lifecycle of Software Objects’, a woman cares for an artificial intelligence over 20 years, elevating a faddish digital pet into what might be a true living being. ![]() ![]() In the epistolary ‘Exhalation’, an alien scientist makes a shocking discovery with ramifications not just for his own people but for all of reality. In ‘The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate’, a portal through time forces a fabric seller in ancient Baghdad to grapple with past mistakes and the temptation of second chances. This much-anticipated second collection of stories is signature Ted Chiang, full of revelatory ideas and deeply sympathetic characters. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Locke & key joe hill![]() ![]() 100 Women Britannica celebrates the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, highlighting suffragists and history-making politicians.COVID-19 Portal While this global health crisis continues to evolve, it can be useful to look to past pandemics to better understand how to respond today.Student Portal Britannica is the ultimate student resource for key school subjects like history, government, literature, and more. ![]()
![]() ![]() As she herself said, before there was the awareness about autism there is today, people with Asperger syndrome “were just called geeks and nerds.” I may have chalked it down to her being weird, or nerdy. In fact, if I hadnʼt known that Grandin has autism, I donʼt think I would have guessed. Grandin is extremely high-functioning she is an associate professor at Colorado State University and a wonderful speaker ― warm, charismatic and funny. On Wednesday evening, I got a chance to hear Grandin speak at Hunter College, which has a new Autism Center. This piece of insight comes directly from Temple Grandin, arguably the most famous person with autism. ![]() Some people with autism see specific, detailed images instead of a generic picture when they imagine an object. "Book Lovers" amusingly leans into all the stereotypical small-town romance tropes. Here's why "Book Lovers" is my favorite Emily Henry novel so far.ġ. While "Beach Read" and "People We Meet on Vacation" were easy and enjoyable reads, I found myself more invested in her latest novel than the others. ![]() "Book Lovers," her most recent novel, will likely make the list as well, based on its popularity on preorder lists and among Goodreads reviewers. I finally fell head-over-heels for contemporary romance novels and rom-coms a couple of years ago, appreciating how easily I can get lost in a well-written romance and how it can remind me that I truly love to read.Įmily Henry has authored and co-authored seven books, but her last two - " Beach Read" and " People We Meet on Vacation" - were New York Times bestsellers. Part of me thought of romance novels as just erotica or the mass-produced books you grab from the grocery store on the way to the DMV. I used to avoid the romance genre entirely, opting instead for heart-racing thrillers or gut-punching literary fiction. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Barbarian lover series![]() He portrayed Roman Godrey in the horror series, Hemlock Grove, and several characters in Castle Rock ( which was unfortunately cancelled, but I love it anyway). ![]() He’s also had much success in television. Some of his other big roles in movies include voicing Deviant Kro in Eternals, appearing in Simple Simon, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the Charlize Theron-led spy thriller, Atomic Blonde, and the independent film, Nine Days, among others. However, Skarsgård is a very talented actor and has done much more than just horror films. If you recognize that name as a horror movie fan, you've got a good memory, as Skarsgård (at least to me) is horror movie royalty for his portrayal of modern horror movie villain, Pennywise, in both IT films, a role he is going to be reprising in a new prequel series, according to Variety. It was not until Hammer’s 1958 Dracula starring Christopher Lee that the traditional supernatural vampire came back into vogue. ![]() More often than not, vampire films of the 1950s associated vampires with mad scientists: sometimes they were the product of mad science other times the vampires were themselves mad scientists, operating laboratories and unleashing monsters as in. ![]() The trend began in earnest with the film House of Dracula (1945), where the Count was portrayed as a victim of an exotic blood parasite who could conceivably be cured by medical science. But it was not until the postwar years that the idea of the scientific vampire reached its peak popularity. Charles Wilkins Webber’s Spiritual Vampirism and Florence Marryat’s Blood of the Vampire drew upon the pseudoscientific topic of psychic power to depict vampires who fed on something less tangible than blood. ![]() James Malcolm Rymer’s ramshackle Varney the Vampire introduced – and later abandoned – the notion that its main character was a man resurrected through galvanism. As far back as the nineteenth century, certain writers had tried to demystify vampires by coming up with scientific explanations for their condition and behaviour. ![]() |
